Geek Girls Gab with Girl Gone Geek

Simply put, Jamila Rowser is obsessed. She is also a military brat and has had the opportunity to call places like Hawaii, Holland, Germany and Gallifrey her home. Thankfully, both her parents are from NYC, which she claims as her “hometown” and where she currently lives.
She grew up with comics, anime, video games, sci-fi and fantasy in her home, and naturally, became quite obsessed. In 2010, she started Girl Gone Geek Blog where she writes about her many obsessions, opinions and passions. Jamila's blog also led her to discover her passion for social media. In 2011, she graduated with a Master's in Communication Arts and she currently works for a social media agency.

The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerd memory?
Jamila:  The most vivid memory involves anime on one hot and humid summer day in the '90s. I was at my uncle's apartment and he's a big anime and martial arts fan. To entertain me, my brother and my cousin, he popped in Akria and Princess Mononoke. My life was forever changed. I've had geeky things around me before then, but for some reason I remember that day vividly.

Being young, I was mesmerized by Akira, and very confused as well as you could imagine. That's probably where my love for gore was born (remember that scene with Tetsuo's arm?!) Princess Mononoke completely changed what I thought a female heroine could be (by Disney's standards). I remember not completely liking her at first and thought she was kind of a bitch, but I liked that. She was genuine. I mean, you'd be mad too if someone was trying to destroy your home!

TNG:  How and why did you start blogging?
Jamila:  I started blogging about three years ago. Being passionate about so many geeky pop culture things, I always want to talk about them. Sadly, I only have a few friends (IRL) that I can geek out with. I like to write and wanted to start a blog, so all paths lead to Girl Gone Geek. It's my outlet to fangirl about comics, anime, sf/f and games. I've had so many amazing experiences because of it!

TNG:  YOUR favorite blog?
Jamila:  Oh man, it's pretty tough because I read so many, but the one I always go to first is The Mary Sue. They're pretty much my go-to for geek news tailored to women. They talk about what I care about.
TNG:  What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Jamila:  What do I NOT nerd out about? Really though, I consider myself a well-rounded geek and my heart resides in many fandoms. But my favorite fandom in all of time and space is Doctor Who. I'm also a big fan of Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, Portal, Batman, Studio Ghibli, Nowhere Men (comic), The Walking Dead, Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Sherlock, anything by Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis or Brian K. Vaughan. Oh and space, time travel, cyberpunk and singularity in general. (And that's me narrowing it down!)

TNG:  Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?
Jamila:  I've never been! Of course it's one of my life goals. But living in NYC there are things like hotel and plane tickets I have to factor in the planning process. I'm actually planning to go next year for sure *crosses fingers*. But some all around con tips are comfy shoes, a portable cell phone charger or plug, vitamins (you don't want to get con fever), an empty big bag to carry all the goodies you buy, a sharpie for autographs and your favorite caffeinated beverage.
TNG:  Girlie things you love?
Jamila:  Jewelry! Etsy is my kryptonite, I spend hours on there. I'm obsessed with Blackmilk's leggings and bathing suits, too. A great black eyeliner and red or pink lipstick are always in my utility belt whenever I see bat signal.

Thank you to the super busy Jamila for answering our questions!  She is an awesome nerdy girlie and is one of my original blogging inspirations.  I, like, her would have a hard time narrowing down the things I nerd out about too!  I am so happy to have her as an amazing geek girl friend!  Check out her SWEET blog:  Girl Gone Geek, find her on Twitter: @girl_gone_geek, Instagram: @girl_gone_geek and Facebook:  Girl Gone Geek.
