Nicole and I first found each other via Twitter {man I LUV that place!}. We just barely missed each other at SDCC, but have been chatting away on Twitter ever since. I am so jealous of all her awesome celeb encounters! Check out all her amazing-ness below!
The Nerdy Girlie: What is your 1st nerd memory?
Nicole: This is embarrassing, but as a little girl (maybe 3 or 4), I was terrified of stormtroopers—I used to make my dad check behind the door to make sure there weren’t any hiding. My earliest really geeky memory is watching Star Trek TNG with my dad every week, though. He done raised me right…and introduced me to the first love of my life, Wil Wheaton. I had a crush on Wesley Crusher by the time I was four…I was doomed to be a geek, I never stood a chance!
TNG: How and why did you start blogging?
Nicole: Well, I’ve been keeping journals my entire life, so as a showboating exhibitionist it felt like a natural transition to put them online for the entire world to see. My first “weblog” was on Xanga (HAHAHA, remember Xanga?!), and it was full of angsty teenage nonsense and Monty Python quotes. Then I calmed down, joined Wordpress after college, and started writing about, well, writing. It’s become more of a personal outlet these days, and I don’t have time to update it as often as I’d like to, but the support and encouragement from my friends (calling them readers would be selling them short)…well, it’s gotten me through some dark times. Bless the internet for bringing people together!
TNG: YOUR favorite blog?
Nicole: Is saying The NerdyGirlie.com too cheesy?! Because I’ve been lurking and loving this site since I found it! The one must-read blog that I actually have email notifications for is withoutsushi.com. Amber West is my soul sister and her blog is geeky and smart and makes me laugh out loud on the regular. Jen Kirchner does a great “Sci-Fi Pinup” segment each month that is NOT to be missed, too.
TNG: What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Nicole: It changes daily. I’m as big of a Disneyland freak as I am a Whovian. My home office is called the Geek Room because it’s seriously bursting with action figures and comic books. I’m beyond obsessed with Joss Whedon. He’s my BFF, he just doesn’t know it. Fun fact: I was going to go to law school until I discovered his oeuvre, that’s when I decided to become a writer instead. JOSS WHEDON CHANGED MY LIFE, GUYS. Other things I’m obsessed with: replaying the Mass Effect trilogy ad nausea, collecting everything R2D2 or Indiana Jones related, and pretty much any comic book that Gail Simone/Matt Fraction/Bryan K. Vaughn has written.
TNG: Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?
Nicole: Go with friends. Camping out for panels is a nightmare, but if you can take a shift and tradeoff so you can run and shower and grab something to eat, well, that's a break you really need if you’re going to live in the Hall H tents for five days. Also, invest in an external phone charger! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost people because someone’s phone died before we could meet up.
TNG: Girlie things you love?
Nicole: This is a great question, I feel like geek girls are almost discouraged from being girly sometimes, and I say eff that: my life is the section of the Venn diagram where Girlie and Geeky overlap. I’m obsessed with makeup, especially eyeliner—and I will spend every cent I have on a good mascara. I’m a total sucker for all things Kate Spade, and my latest beauty obsession is dyeing my hair with henna blocks from Lush (their Caca Rouge Mama has a ridiculous name but does gorgeous things to my hair!). My favorite Girlie thing, though? That would be lusting after Tom Hiddleston. If I had a patronus, I’d want it to be him. Bye, swooning forever.
