It’s Music Monday and I’ve got three bands for you that The Nerdy Girlie Team saw live in San Diego at the House Of Blues – The Soft White Sixties, Caught A Ghost, and The Crookes. I’ve been a fan of The Crookes and was looking forward to seeing them live, I left the show an even bigger fan of The Crookes, but a new fan of The Soft White Sixties, and Caught A Ghost as well.
The Soft White Sixties hail from San Francisco and they started the night off with a bang – literally. We met up with our friend Noel at the show and we were chatting at the back of the room waiting for the show to start – well, The Soft White Sixties were ready to go and just ripped into the start of their set without warning. I might’ve suffered a slight case of heart failure, but it was all good because The Soft White Sixties put on a helluva set. These guys are down n’ dirty, badass rock n’ roll and I loved every minute of their set. I’ve been listening to their album Get Right nonstop.

The second band up that night at the House of Blues was Caught A Ghost. Caught A Ghost is new project from LA’s Jesse Nolan. I was already intrigued when I saw that his backing band included a trombone player – as a former band kid and first chair trumpet player – I love a horn section. His entire backing band was really great and Jesse Nolan is a great front man. Caught A Ghost’s album Human Nature is a nice blend of blue-eyed soul, funk, and R&B. By the end of their set they had taken the audience to church – hands were in the air and people were swaying to the music.

And, finally, the band that we’d been waiting for – The Crookes! I discovered The Crookes through their label Modern Outsider. I’d been listening to their album SOAPBOX and waiting for them to tour in the States – sadly there wasn’t a Denver date, but lucky for us they played San Diego the same week as SDCC. Sometimes the music gods work everything out perfectly. They played an amazing set. Front man George Waite is a modern day Elvis/Buddy Holly – he’s got more energy on stage than any young front man I can think of and he delivers every song with so much commitment. The Crookes are distinctly British, but this is the year that America is going to fall in love with them.
